lead safe renovator

Lead Safety in Home Renovation

We are a certified Lead-Safe Renovator in the State of Iowa. Our certification means we are trained to follow lead-safe work practices when performing renovation, repair, and painting activities that may disturb lead-based paint.

Lead is a naturally occurring metal that was commonly used in paint and other building materials in the past. Although lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978, it may still be present in older homes and buildings.

Why Lead Matters

Lead-based paint generally does not pose a hazard when it is intact and in good condition. However, renovation activities such as sanding, scraping, cutting, drilling, or removing painted surfaces can create lead dust and paint chips.

Lead exposure can be harmful, particularly to young children and pregnant individuals. Because lead dust can be very small and difficult to see, proper work practices are important when renovating older properties.

Lead-Safe Renovation Practices

As a certified Lead-Safe Renovator, we follow applicable lead-safe requirements when working on projects where lead-based paint may be present.

Depending on the project, lead-safe practices may include:

  • Containing the work area to help prevent the spread of lead dust
  • Protecting floors, furniture, and other surfaces
  • Using work methods that minimize dust and debris
  • Keeping dust and debris contained during the renovation
  • Maintaining appropriate separation between the work area and occupied areas
  • Cleaning the work area using appropriate lead-safe procedures
  • Properly handling and disposing of renovation debris

Older Homes and Lead-Based Paint

Homes and buildings constructed before 1978 have a greater likelihood of containing lead-based paint. The age of a property does not necessarily mean that lead is present, but it is an important consideration when planning renovation work.

The condition of the paint, the type of work being performed, and the surfaces being disturbed all play a role in determining what lead-safe precautions are appropriate.

Our Iowa Certification

We are certified as a Lead-Safe Renovator in Iowa and maintain the required training to perform applicable renovation work using lead-safe practices.

Our certification reflects our responsibility to understand the potential hazards associated with lead-based paint and to follow the appropriate procedures when performing work that may disturb it.

For more information about lead-based paint and lead-safe renovation, homeowners can visit the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for additional resources.
